British Values
At Red Barn Community Primary School, we are committed to promoting British Values and preparing our pupils to play a positive role in modern Britain. Through our curriculum, school ethos, and daily practice, we actively promote democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Democracy is a key feature of school life. Each year, Young Governors are elected by their class to act as representatives for their class. Young Governors have a valued voice within the school and contribute to discussions and key decisions, helping pupils understand how democratic processes work and how their views can bring about change.
Pupils are encouraged to have their voices heard through class discussions, pupil leadership roles, and opportunities to share opinions and make choices. Clear expectations, consistent behaviour systems, and restorative approaches help pupils understand the importance of rules and the consequences of their actions. We promote individual liberty by teaching children how to make safe, informed choices and by providing opportunities for responsibility and independence.
Respect and tolerance are central to life at Red Barn. Through our curriculum, assemblies, PSHE, and relationships education, pupils learn to value diversity, challenge stereotypes, and show empathy and kindness towards others. We celebrate different cultures, traditions, and beliefs, helping pupils to develop understanding and respect for all members of our community.
By embedding British Values across school life, Red Barn Community Primary School ensures that pupils are well prepared for life in a diverse and ever-changing society.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC)
At Red Barn Community Primary School, we are committed to developing pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) understanding to prepare them for life beyond school and to become thoughtful, responsible, and confident members of society.
Spiritual development is promoted through opportunities for reflection, curiosity, and discussion. Pupils are encouraged to explore their own beliefs, values, and sense of self, as well as to appreciate the beliefs and experiences of others. Assemblies, curriculum learning, and reflective moments support pupils in developing awe, wonder, and a sense of purpose.
Moral development is embedded through our clear behaviour expectations, consistent routines, and restorative approaches. Pupils learn to distinguish right from wrong, understand the consequences of their actions, and develop a strong sense of fairness and responsibility. Ethical discussions are encouraged across the curriculum, helping pupils to make informed and respectful choices.
Social development is a strength of our school community. Pupils are taught how to work collaboratively, show respect for others, and contribute positively to school life. Weekly SCAR PSHE lessons, delivered by class teachers, explicitly develop personal, social, and emotional skills, supporting pupils to build healthy relationships and manage emotions effectively. Our MyHappyMind programme further promotes wellbeing, resilience, and positive mental health.
Cultural development is fostered through learning about and celebrating diversity within our school, local community, and wider world. Pupils are given opportunities to explore different cultures, traditions, and beliefs through the curriculum, assemblies, themed events, and visitors, helping them to develop tolerance, respect, and appreciation of difference.
Through a broad and balanced curriculum, high-quality PSHE provision, and a strong focus on wellbeing, Red Barn Community Primary School ensures that SMSC development is woven through all aspects of school life, enabling pupils to thrive both academically and personally.
