One of the key aspects of our curriculum is our child-led approach. At the start of each academic year, our pupils are given the opportunity to choose the topics they would like to explore, ensuring that the content is relevant and engaging for them. Our teachers then skillfully weave the aims and objectives of the national primary curriculum into these chosen topics, creating a dynamic and personalised learning experience.

This unique and effective approach to curriculum design has resulted in outstanding levels of progress and excellent Key Stage 2 results for our pupils. By fostering their natural curiosity and interests, we are able to create a learning environment where our pupils are truly invested in their own development.

As our pupils progress through Red Barn Primary, they are not only meeting the academic standards set out by the national curriculum, but they are also developing the essential life skills and values that will prepare them for the next stage of their learning journey. Our three simple rules - Safety, Respect, and Learning - guide our approach and ensure that every child who steps aboard the "Red Barn Bus" is equipped with the tools they need to succeed.

P.E Curriculum overview

Physical Education Curriculum Intent

At Red Barn Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum aims to inspire pupils to enjoy movement, develop competence, and understand the value of an active and healthy lifestyle. Using the PE Planning scheme of work, we provide a broad and progressive programme that builds physical skills, confidence, and positive attitudes towards physical activity.

PE is taught by both class teachers and specialist coaches from CM Sports, enabling pupils to benefit from a blend of consistent school-based teaching and expert external coaching. Throughout their time in primary school, children experience a wide variety of sports, games, and movement activities that support their physical development and nurture a lifelong enjoyment of being active.

To enhance our curriculum offer, we also work with specialist coaches from the LTA for tennis and Hampshire Cricket for cricket. These partnerships allow pupils to access high-quality coaching and develop sport-specific skills in engaging and aspirational ways. Beyond lessons, children are encouraged to participate in a range of after-school clubs, giving further opportunities to extend their learning, build teamwork, and pursue personal interests.

We actively promote physical activity throughout the school day, encouraging children to be as active as possible during break and lunch times. Through purposeful play, accessible equipment, and opportunities for structured games, we foster a culture where movement is valued and every child feels motivated to take part.

Pupils also have the chance to represent Red Barn at external sporting festivals and competitions. These events help build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging, while reinforcing the skills and values taught in school.

Our aim is to develop confident, capable, and enthusiastic young people who understand the benefits of physical activity and are equipped to make positive choices about their health and wellbeing throughout their lives.

Our Physical Education curriculum encourages:

  • Cooperation, communication, and teamwork, alongside opportunities for healthy competition.

The PE Planning scheme of work aligns with the National Curriculum aims and ensures skills are revisited, consolidated, and extended across the key stages.

In the EYFS, our Year R pupils work towards the Physical Development Early Learning Goals and Development Matters statements. They explore movement, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness through both structured activities and play-based experiences, laying the foundations for confident and safe participation as they progress into Key Stage 1 and beyond.

History Curriculum

History Curriculum Intent

At Red Barn Primary School, our history curriculum is designed to help pupils recognise themselves as young historians and develop a lasting curiosity about the past. Central to our approach is the six-step enquiry model, which underpins every history unit from EYFS to Year 6. This model ensures pupils learn to think, question, and behave like historians, building knowledge progressively and interpreting evidence to answer key enquiry questions.

Our History curriculum encourages:

·         Applying the six-step enquiry approach to investigate key questions.

·         Asking perceptive and historically valid questions.

·         Interpreting and evaluating a range of historical sources.

·         Building secure chronological knowledge.

·         Exploring significant individuals, events, and civilisations.

The Six-Step Enquiry Model scheme of work aligns with the National Curriculum aims and supports pupils in meeting the end of key stage 1 and 2 attainment targets.

In the EYFS, pupils begin to explore the concept of time and change through stories, play, and discussion, laying the foundations for historical thinking in Key Stage 1.

 

Geography Curriculum

 

Geography Curriculum Intent

At Red Barn Primary School, our geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and inspire a deep interest in the world around us. Using the Kapow Primary geography scheme of work, we aim to nurture pupils into confident, inquisitive learners who think like geographers - exploring, questioning and understanding the diverse landscapes, cultures and environments that shape our planet.

Through engaging and thought-provoking learning experiences, pupils are encouraged to ask meaningful questions, observe and investigate places, collect and interpret data, and share their discoveries in creative and thoughtful ways. They develop a strong understanding of what makes places unique, how they are interconnected and why location matters.

Ultimately, we aim to develop resourceful, active citizens who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a positive impact and contribute to a better, more sustainable future.

Our geography curriculum encourages: 

·            a strong focus on developing both geographical skills and knowledge.

·            critical thinking, with the ability to ask perceptive questions and explain and analyse evidence.

·            the development of fieldwork skills across each year group.

·            a deep interest and knowledge of our local area and how it differs from other areas of the world.

·            a growing understanding of geographical concepts, terms and vocabulary.

Kapow Primary's geography scheme of work aligns with the national curriculum geography aims and enables pupils to meet the end of key stage 1 and 2 attainment targets. In line with national curriculum guidance, our geography curriculum content is organised into four strands: locational knowledge; place knowledge; human and physical geography; and geographical skills and fieldwork. There is a clear progression of skills and knowledge within these strands across each year group.  

In the EYFS, our Year R pupils to work towards the Understanding the World Development Matters statements and Early Learning Goals, while also covering foundational knowledge that will support them in their further geography learning in key stage 1. The children are introduced to the concept of geography by exploring, discovering and beginning to make sense of the world around them. They engage in activities to reflect on the events that they experience; to question and investigate the similarities and differences that exist; and to discuss why things happen the way they do in both the physical and human world.
