Year 1
In Year 1, children begin to make the transition from the Early Years curriculum to more structured learning, while still benefiting from continuous provision to support their development through exploration and play. We introduce more formal Maths and English lessons, helping children build strong foundational skills. Phonics remains a key focus, and we follow the Little Wandle scheme to ensure a consistent and effective approach to reading. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach early reading and phonics. This systematic, synthetic phonics scheme is designed to help all children become confident, fluent readers. The programme provides a clear structure for teaching phonics, with daily lessons that build on children’s prior knowledge and regular assessments to ensure progress. It also includes engaging reading books that are closely matched to each child's phonics level, supporting success and enjoyment in reading. For more information about the scheme and helpful resources for parents, visit the Little Wandle Website.
Number fluency is also introduced, laying the groundwork for confident mathematical understanding. Our spacious outdoor environment continues to play an important role in learning, providing opportunities for outdoor activities that enhance both academic and personal development.
